Carpinteria’s Kelsie Bryant and her partner Sophia Whittle upset the fourth-seeded team at the Southern California Junior Sectional Doubles Championships.
Bryant and Whittle (Nipomo) defeated Gabrielle Andrews and Devon Jack, 8-6, in a round of 16 match at the Los Caballeros Racquet Club in Fountain Valley. Andrews is the one of the top youth players in the country. She’s won the Junior Australian Open doubles championship and was runner-up in doubles at the Junior U.S. Open. She’s committed to UCLA.
Bryant is coming off winning the Tri-Valley League singles title, giving her four league individual titles in her high school career. She’ll lead Carpinteria High into the CIF Division 2 team playoffs this week.
Carpinteria Athletic Director Pat Cooney heaped praise on Bryant, a multi-sport athlete at the school.
“The end of Kelsie’s high school career is slightly bitter sweet,” he said. “On one hand, it’s like watching Derek Jeter wrap up a Hall of Fame career. On the other hand, we know that Kelsie is just starting to get the notoriety that she deserves at the next level. It will be exciting to watch this whole thing unfold.”
