SBCC cross country runner Alex Heuchert and Cate School volleyball setter Hannah Barr sparked their respective teams to big post-season performances over the weekend.
Their efforts earned them Athlete of the Week honors from the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table.
Heuchert finished fourth overall and led the SBCC men’s team to its best finish in program history at the Community College State Cross Country Championships in Fresno. The Vaqueros placed seventh in the team competiiton, with Heuchert running the fastest time by a Vaquero on the 4-mile course at Woodward Park. The sophomore ran 20 minutes, 20 seconds and earned All-American honors.
Barr smartly mixed up her sets, helping Cate defeat Duarte in the CIF-SS Division 4A championship match at Cerritos College. The junior finished with 51 assists in the four-set victory, which gave Cate its first CIF girls volleyball title since 1991.
The female honorable mention choices for the award include Brooke Lillywhite (Westmont soccer), Adilene Aldapa (San Marcos) and Kelly Collins (Westmont cross country).
John Green (UCSB basketball) and Wade Allen (UCSB swimmer) were the male honorable mention selections.
