After her career-best performances on both sides of the net this weekend, Chanel Hoffman was named the Big West Freshman Player of the Week the conference announced on Monday.
It is Hoffman’s first time receiving a conference weekly award, while she is the second Gaucho to earn one this season with Ali Spindt being named Defensive Player of the Week last month.
The outside hitter opened the weekend against UC Irvine with her team-high 14 kills and career-best 11 digs. The freshman was also second on the Gauchos with four total blocks, as she finished with 18.5 points.
In UCSB’s match at Cal State Fullerton, Hoffman finished with 19 points, as she had a career night at the net with a personal-best six block assists, while swinging for 15 kills off an efficient .419 clip. Defensively, the Corona, Calif. native scooped up an impressive nine digs and also was a force at the service line, highlighted by an 8-0 run she orchestrated for UCSB that would give the team its first lead of the game.
Also nominated for the award were Lauren Conati (CSUN), Erika Conners (UC Davis), Raeann Greisen (Cal Poly), Ashley Murray (Long Beach State), and Niki Withers (Cal State Fullerton).
UCSB is returning to the Thunderdome this weekend to host Long Beach State (10/17) and Cal State Northridge (10/18), who are both receiving votes in the AVCA Coaches Poll.
