MALIBU – UC Santa Barbara doubles teams fell just short of a semifinals berth in the main draw of the ITA Southwest Regionals as both Gaucho duos lost to teams from UCLA on Sunday. Meanwhile in singles play, three UCSB players advanced to the quarterfinals in the consolation bracket.
Beginning the day in doubles action, sophomores Teague Hamilton and Morgan Mays failed to record their fourth straight win in doubles as they fell against Di Giulio and Sell 8-4. The fourth seeded pairing of Ziad Sultan and Tobias Galskov also lost, dropping a close 8-6 match to Brymer and Mkrtchian of UCLA.
In the consolation singles draw, three of the seven Gauchos playing in the Round of 16 advanced to the quarterfinals.
Freshman Cody Rakela continued his strong fall play, defeating teammate Ziad Sultan 6-0, 6-2 while senior Tobias Galskov also defeated one of his teammates, dropping sophomore Erik Johnsson 6-3, 6-2. Sophomore Luke Steeb also moved on to the quarterfinals after beating UCLA’s Michael Guzman 6-3, 7-5.
Play will continue at the ITA Southwest Regionals on Monday at 9:30AM.
