A day after losing its first league match in three and a half seasons, Carpinteria’s girls tennis team pulled off a remarkable comeback on Thursday to keep it from being two losses in the past three and a half years.
The Warriors won the final three doubles sets in a 9-9 draw with Cate and clinched the match with a 75-73 advantage in games.
Carpinteria head coach Charles Bryant called it a “miraculous comeback” as the Warriors needed to win each of the final three matches in order to survive. Cate took a 7-5 lead into the third round but couldn’t hold the two-set advantage.
Kelsie Bryant’s three-set sweep were Carpinteria’s only points in singles play. Each of the Warriors’ doubles teams won two sets, with Merissa Souza and Lesly Zapata capturing a clutch 7-6 tiebreak win.
“We went from playing some questionable tennis to playing great tennis. I guess it just took us a while to get going,” Bryant said. “I was very proud of their efforts and their ‘never say die’ attitude.”
The Warriors improved to 3-1 in the Tri-Valley League.
