It took the No. 1 team in CIF-ss Division 1 to hand Santa Barbara High its first dual-match loss of the season, a 13-5 non-league victory for Peninsula on Wednesday.
Peninsula (7-0) is the top-ranked team in the Dons’ division. Santa Barbara (6-1) is No. 4.
The Panthers dominated singles play by taking eight of nine sets. ‘
Madison Hale and Cade Sorensen formed a doubles team that Peninsula failed to crack, winning three of Santa Barbara’s five sets. Summer Garrison won the Dons’ one singles set while Lexy Gulden and Marianna Alevra claimed another set in doubles.
Dons head coach Greg Tebbe took a positive tone following Santa Barbara’s first loss of the season.
“I like how we are playing at this stage of the season. We still need to improve as a team but I like our effort and work ethic. We were not intimidated by this team and our girls are confident no matter who they are playing.”
Santa Barbara plays its third match in three days against San Marcos.
