SBCC had trouble with a longer course on Monday and the Vaqueros finished third for the second straight week in the sixth WSC women’s golf tournament at Brookside GC in Pasadena.
The par was 75 and the course was the longest of the season (6,372 yards).
Saralisa Ortega led the Vaqueros at 88, followed by Laine Johnson (95), Sara Pettersson (97) and Tiffany Huang (98). Lexandra So of Citrus was the medalist at 1-under 74.
Canyons shot 333 and remained undefeated in conference at 24-0. Citrus was second 372, edging the Vaqueros by six shots. SBCC is second in the WSC at 16-8, two games ahead of Citrus (14-10).
“This wasn’t the response I was looking for and it’s kind of scary because this is the same course we’re playing next week in the 36-hole WSC Championships,” said SBCC coach Chuck Melendez. “We didn’t play our best golf and we lost a lot of strokes putting. We also had difficulty with the length of the course.
“Hopefully, this was just an abnormality and we’ll move on and play well next week.”
The WSC Championships (and WSC No. 7 and 8) will be held at Brookside on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. and Monday at 8 a.m.
The conference champion will advance to the Southern Cal Regional. The lowest-scoring team among the other three schools in the 36-hole WSC Finals will also advance along with the top two individuals. The other 10 individual spots will be filled by the best scoring averages from the 8-meet WSC season.
