San Marcos sophomore Erica Schroeder won her first high school cross country race on Wednesday, but it was Ventura who came away with team victories in the boys and girls races at the first Channel League Meet of the season.
Held at Dos Pueblos’ course, runners endured high temperatures that sapped energy and tested each athlete’s expectations coming into the race.
“I didn’t really feel it too much the first two miles but the last mile was absolutely awful,” said Chris Wasjutin, Dos Pueblos’ top male finisher. “Everything that could have gone wrong went wrong.”
Wasjutin’s time – and several others – weren’t up to their own standards.
The temperatures were so unusually high that Dos Pueblos Athletic Director Dan Feldhaus took the precaution of having an ambulance present at the race for safety.
Schroeder and second-place runner Elaine McClure found a way to overcome the conditions and came on strong in the end. Schroeder’s winning time was 18 minutes and 26.71 seconds.
“That was kind of what I was trying to do,” Schroeder said. “When I was coming into the race I was trying not to get out faster than anyone. I was just trying to stay in the front and by the end just try to pick off as many people as I could.”

Schroeder – who won a CIF track & field title in the 800 as a freshman – took the lead for good on the final incline leading back to the stadium finish.
“The hill helped me out a lot because that’s when people start slowing down, so I just try to use the hill to my advantage,” Schroeder said.
McClure, who was close to not even racing, exceeded her own expectations by placing second.
“This week just hasn’t been great. I’ve had a head cold, not much sleep and everything. But I decided to race because we already had one out so we kinda needed it,” McClure explained.
Elaine’s younger sister Natalie McClure passed Adilene Aldapa and Ruth Hunter in the final 100 yards to claim third place for the Chargers.
“It was surprising that I beat (Natalie) but I think it’s good that we pushed each other and it’s going to be helpful for us in the end,” Elaine said.
Chargers coach Kyle Visin liked what he saw from both of them.
“(Elaine) ran really well with her sister in the first half, they worked together,” Visin said. “Then she just had a better day, and sometimes it goes the other way, but it was really good to see her kick it in.
“And Natalie, even though it probably wasn’t her best race, she dug really, really deep at the end down the finish chute.”
Dos Pueblos’ girls team tied with Ventura with 51 points but the Cougars had the better sixth time for the tiebreaker.
“The goal is to have the girls running together and for the most part they finished where we hoped,” said Ventura coach Preston Biller. “And it was a tie so it was cool to see our sixth runner, Jenny (Gonzalez), that was the key to the race was her finishing in that position.”

The boys race was won by Buena’s Kaleb Kunes, closely followed by teammate Andrew Witt. The pair finished together with Kunes’ time at 15:24.33 and Witt at 15:25.00.
Ventura’s Evan Askar and Garrett Reynolds claimed third and fourth, respectively, while DP’s Wasjutin came in fifth with a time of 16:00.80.
Dos Pueblos freshman Joshua McGregor was seventh in 16:11.50. Hunter Clark took 10th, Ian Wasjutin 11th, and Nathan Alvarez 17th as Dos Pueblos’ boys finished third overall (50) behind Ventura (30) and Buena (46).
Visin said he was impressed with McGregor’s first varsity race. The freshman won the ninth-grade race at last week’s Seaside Invitational but had yet to jostle with the upperclassmen.
Logan Briner, in 12th overall, was San Marcos’ fastest runner on Wednesday. His time of 16:26.89 was a personal record.
Santa Barbara’s top male was Will Walter in 20th place (16:47.39). Sophomore Ruth Hunter took fourth in the girls race.
The second of three Channel League meets is scheduled for Wednesday, October 8 at Arroyo Verde Park in Ventura.
