Dean Roell finished 50th in a field of 181 runners on Friday, leading SBCC to 16th place in the Southern Cal Preview women’s cross country race at Woodley Park in Van Nuys.
Roell was timed in 20:22 in the 5K, slicing nearly four minutes off her season-opening time , which came on a tougher course three weeks ago. Michaela Dahringer was 62nd in 20:38 and Kylie Walker finished 89th in 21:20.
Glendale was the team champion, followed by Canyons (68) and Mt. SAC (79).
Laura Aceves of East Los Angeles was the individual winner in 18:11. There were A and B races and the race was run under cloudy skies with temperatures around 80.
“We went in with a conservative race plan and came away with many good early season performances,” said coach Scott Fickerson. “The goal was to get out controlled and move forward through the pack and we had a nearly 90% success rate.
“The women worked well as a group and came away with a strong performance. We still have lot of work ahead of us, but today shows me that we are a team with realistic goals of qualifying for state.”
