SBCC overcame an early 1-0 deficit and 95-degree heat to beat Taft 4-1 on Tuesday for its first women’s soccer victory of the year.
The Vaqueros (1-2-1) thought they tied the score in the sixth minute when Lena Gustafsson smashed one in from 30 yards out but the ball popped out quickly to the goalie and the official said no goal.
Jackie Hollmer made it 1-1 in the 26th minute by heading in a pass from Sandy Grimaldo. Gustaffson gave the Vaqueros a 2-1 halftime lead with a goal in the 31st minute.
Kaitlyn Crooker scored twice on assists from Hannah Martin in a four-minute span of the second half. The sophomore from Alameda found the net in the 52nd and 56th minutes.
“The girls played very well and deserved the win,” said coach John Sisterson. “We responded well after going down a goal in the opening minutes. Karin (Nordin) played well in goal and Lena was strong on defense. Our center backs, Madison Shaw and Emily Erwin, also played well.”
The Vaqueros continue their six-game, season-opening road trip on Friday at San Diego Mesa. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
