UCSB women’s soccer coach Paul Stumpf has been reprimanded by the Big West for comments critical of the match officials following a 2-1 loss in double overtime against Loyola Marymount on Sunday at Harder Stadium.
Stumpf disputed the winning goal, which came 39 seconds into the second overtime. LMU’s Sarah Sanger and UCSB defender Sydney Fuertes got tangled up chasing after a long ball into the Gaucho zone. Fuertes appeared to get tripped on the play, leaving Sanger one on one with goalkeeper Beth Ritter. Sanger eluded a charging Ritter and scored into the open net for the game winner.
Following the match, Stumpf was critical of the officials in quotes made to the Santa Barbara News-Press. In addition, he posted video on social media to encourage comment on the officiating of the match, said the Big West in a press release.
Big West Commissioner Dennis Farrell said public criticism of officials is contrary to sportsmanship regulations outlined in the Big West Bylaws.
