UC Santa Barbara sophomore left back Drew Murphy has been named the Big West Player of the Week by College Sports Madness, the website announced this morning.
Murphy picked up the award after recording a goal and two assists over a pair of UCSB wins this past weekend, as he assisted on the only goal in a 1-0 victory over San Diego State on Friday before notching the game winner and assisting on another goal in a 4-1 rout of Drake on Sunday.
The Palos Verdes, Calif. native was also named to the College Soccer News “National Team of the Week” and was a Big West Conference Offensive Player of the Week nominee. He is the first Gaucho this season to pick up a weekly award.
It is the second conference Player of the Week honor in his career, previously earning an accolade on Oct. 21, 2013 after recording a goal and assist in a 3-2 away win over UC Davis.
For the season, Murphy has a team-best seven points (two goals, three assists) while starting all eight of the squad’s games.
Drew and the rest of the men’s soccer squad will start conference play this week, hosting rivals Cal State Northridge on Thursday night and UC Irvine on Saturday night.
