GTen: Royals roar back to topple Carpinteria, 11-7

San Marcos swept the third round of matches to rally past Carpinteria, 11-7, in a non-league girls tennis match on Monday at the Royals’ courts.

Julia Frohling and Renee Handley each went 2-1 for the Royals in singles and the doubles teams of Summer Bosse-Carley McDaniel and Kinsley Shinn-Francesca Diamond also posted 2-1 records.

“I am happy how the girls battled in the last round to sweep all 6 points to clinch the win,” said San Marcos coach Fred Hartzman, whose team is now 2-2.

Kelsie Bryant of Carpinteria won two sets, 6-0, 6-0, before being substituted in the third round.

“San Marcos had a great comeback against us today,” Carpinteria coach Charles Bryant said. “We were leading 7-4 with one match to play in the second round but we did not win another
set the rest of the day.”

After Bryant, the Warriors won just one set in singles.

“I actually think it is a good wake up call and, of course, would rather take the
losses now than in league or CIF,” coach Bryant said. “We are still experimenting with
lineups and positions but I give San Marcos a lot of credit. They did a great job of not quitting and kept coming at us.”

Bryant added: “Right now we are on a bit of a roller coaster, but I am hoping we will smooth it out soon and then continue to progress once we get a little more stabilized.”

Carpinteria is now 3-2-1 overall.
