A tougher course and a windy day sent scores soaring on Sunday in the first round of the South Coast Classic women’s golf tournament at Olivas Links in Ventura.
Saralisa Ortega shot 84, leading SBCC to fifth place with 357 strokes. College of the Desert sits atop the eight-team field at 319. Irvine Valley is second at 341, followed by Canyons at 342.
Laine Johnson shot 89 for the Vaqueros. Jamie Lopez of Citrus was the medalist at 2-over 74.
“The course had its way with us on a very windy day,” said coach Chuck Melendez. “This is a tougher course than we played last week. We’re getting a little better but we have a long way to go.”
The Vaqueros will compete in two events on Monday — the final round of the South Coast Classic and WSC No. 1. Both will be held at Buenaventura GC.
