The Channel League girls volleyball campaign kicks off with a bang as rivals San Marcos and Santa Barbara High clash Wednesday at Santa Barbara’s J.R. Richards Gym. First serve is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
The crosstown rivals are both ranked in the CIF-SS Division 1A top 10 — the Royals are No. 8 and the Dons are ninth. The teams are loaded with talent and experienced players. San Marcos is led by the powerhouse trio of Anika Wilson, Emily Allen and Chloe Allen. Santa Barbara counters with setter Lexi Rottman and outside hitters Jessyca Beksa and Lourda Weger.
San Marcos enters the match with a 4-1 match record and a San Luis Obispo Tournament championship. The Royals’ lone loss came at Division 1AA school Harvard Westlake. Santa Barbara is 8-3 after knocking off Harvard Westlake on Tuesday night.
Santa Barbara is the defending league champion but it lost both matches against the Royals last year.
“We are excited and ready to compete,” San Marcos coach Erica Menzel Downing said of the showdown. “it will be a good game.”
