Carpinteria lost both its quarterbacks and managed to hang on and beat Santa Ynez 35-27 in a non-league football game at Pirates Stadium on Friday night.
The Warriors, playing their season opener, rolled up 500 yards on the ground and scored all their points in the first half.
They took some big hits, though. Quarterback Rayshaun Moore was injured the first offensive play of the game. It’s believed he broke his leg. Late in the second quarter, Jimmy Graves suffered a possible concussion and left the game. With no third-string quarterback on the squad, the Warriors used Oscar Garcia and Aaron Vargas at quarterback and they held the offense together.
“Our guys played gritty,” said Carpinteria coach Ben Hallock
Adrian Castillo made a huge defensive play late in the fourth quarter to secure the win, intercepting a pass in the end zone.
Before getting injured, Graves rushed for 120 yards on just eight carries and passed for another 105 yards in the first half.
Austin Vreeland and quarterback Bear Redell led Santa Ynez’s comeback bid. Vreeland scored on an 80-yard touchdown run.
