Susan Carey, a standout basketball and softball player, was named the Special Olympics Athlete of the Month on Monday at the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table press luncheon.
Carey was presented the award by Andrea Diaz, an employee at Union Bank and a former Bishop Diego athlete and coach who works with Santa Barbara Special Olympics. Diaz said Carey made a game-saving play at catcher at a recent softball tournament in Ventura.
Tim Philibosian, regional sports manager for Special Olympics, announced some events coming in the next few weeks. On Saturday, Oct. 4, the Tennis Classic will take place at Santa Barbara Tennis Club. Players from the local high schools, UCSB, SBCC and Westmont pair up with Special Olympics athletes for doubles competition.
Santa Barbara is hosting a soccer tournament on Oct. 26 at Girsh Park. Two local teams will be joined by teams from all over southern California.
On Nov. 7, local elementary, junior and senior high soccer teams will play each other in the School Games at Girsh Park.
