The poise and confidence of Oscar Garcia and Macy Broesamle spurred them do some big things to help their respective teams last week.
Broesamle made a hole-in-one en route to a nine-hole round of 40, helping the Dos Pueblos High golf team beat Rio Mesa to stay undefeated on the season.
Garcia, a running back on the Carpinteria High football team, was pressed into duty at quarterback when the Warriors’ lost their two signal callers to injuries in the first half of their season opener at Santa Ynez. The junior stepped up and managed the offense in a 35-27 victory.
The performances by Garcia and Broesamle have earned them Athlete of the Week honors by the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table.
Broesamle, a senior, aced the 125-yard No. 6 hole at Glen Annie Golf Club. It was the first hole-in-one by a Charger golfer in Rob Schiff’s 10 years as the coach.
Garcia rushed for 111 yards and three touchdowns, helping Carpinteria build a 35-14 lead in the first half. He played steady as an emergency fill-in at the quarterback position in the second half, and Carpinteria held on to beat Santa Ynez.
The male honorable mention choices for this week’s award were George Kuesis (San Marcos water polo), Blake Parrish (Dos Pueblos water polo), Daniel Johnsen (Westmont soccer) and Stephen McCaffery (Laguna Blanca football).
The female athletes who received honorable mention accolades include Katelynn Womack (SBCC volleyball), Ciena Colburn (Westmont volleyball), Malory Mitchell (Westmont soccer) and Mattea Kilstofte (Santa Barbara High tennis).
The Athlete of the Week award is presented Mondays during the school year at the Athlete Round Table press luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Café.
The award is voted on by members of the local sports media.
