UC Santa Barbara senior Dani Moreno easily cruised to a first-place finish in the women’s race at the annual Lagoon Run on Saturday, clocking a 17:21.91 over the 5k course to finish nearly 30 second ahead of teammate Maxine Goyette, but Cal Poly’s depth was too much as the Mustangs won the Blue-Gree Rivalry dual meet, 25-34.
Goyette, a junior, was second in a time of 17:51.25, but the next five places were all Cal Poly runners. Mary Jo Wright (17:56.91), Melissa Eisele (18:02.74), Meghan Breadmore (18:10.85), Ashley Windsor (18:11.87) and Molly Harr (18:12.76) finished third through seventh respectively.
UCSB’s Sarah Shreck was eighth in 18:13.48, while Bailey Miller was 12th (18:39.33) and Jenna Hinkle finished 15th (18:51.49).
The Gauchos are off for a week and will do their annual altitude training. They return to competition on Sept. 13 when they travel to the UC Riverside Invitational.
On the men’s side, UCSB’s Bryan Guijarro and Anthony Ortolan easily outran the rest of the field to finish 1-2 and lead the Gauchos to a 15-40 win.
Guijarro finished the 8k course in 24:50.36 while Ortolan wasn’t far behind at 24:53.77. The juniors led a Gaucho sweep of the top-six spots in the dual meet against the Mustangs. Shyan Vaziri, another junior, was fourth overall, but third among attached runners, in a time of 25:15.15.
Rounding out the UCSB sweep were juniors Brad Littooy (fifth overall, fourth among attached runners in 25:19.21) and Andrew Farkas (sixth overall, fifth among attached runners in 25:20.60), and sophomore Jackson Bright (seventh overall, sixth among attached runners in 25:27.53).
Cal Poly’s top finisher was Albert Gamez who finished 8th/7th in a time of 25:27.88.
The Gauchos will return to action in two weeks w
