SBCC peppered the Sierra goalkeeper with 18 shots on Saturday but came away with a 0-0 tie in a women’s soccer match at the Ventura Tournament.
Sandy Grimaldo, Madison Shaw and Hannah Martin paced the offense for Santa Barbara (0-1-1). The Vaqueros outshot the Wolverines 18-5, including 10-1 in shots on goal.
“We played a lot better than we did in our opener (on Friday),” said coach John Sisterson. “We kept it tight in the back and created a lot of chances.
“In the first half, the ball was bouncing around their penalty area for about 10 minutes. We had one ball headed off the line. Then Sandy delivered a lovely ball across the goal line and three of our attackers missed chipping it in.”
Sierra is a strong team from Northern California that has won 33 games the last two years.
Sisterson said Lena Gustafsson played well at right back in her first college start and defender Tavara Zachert-Johnson “played her best game ever.”
The Vaqueros are playing their first six games on the road. They’ll travel to Rancho Cucamonga to take on Chaffey on Friday at 2 p.m.
