Tim Gleeson, an all-state punter on SBCC’s football team last year, has signed a letter-of-intent to play football at Rutgers, according to SBCC coach Craig Moropoulos.
Gleeson, a 6-2 sophomore from Heidelberg, Australia, earned All-State Region 5 honors after being the No. 1 punter in Southern Cal and No. 2 in the state with a 40.3-yard average. He was also No. 1 in So Cal with 21 of his 52 punts inside the 20-yard line. His season best was a 65-yarder vs. Santa Monica.
The Vaqueros went 7-3 in 2013 for their best record in 22 years.
“Tim was an integral part of our success last season,” said Vaquero coach Craig Moropoulos. “He was an all-conference punter and was second in the state of California. He is an outstanding person and an outstanding athlete and we wish him luck in the upcoming season.
“Rutgers is moving to the Big Ten and we are looking forward to seeing Tim ‘live’ against Ohio State and Michigan State.”
Rutgers, located in Piscataway, N.J., went 6-7 last year and played in the Pinstripe Bowl, losing to Notre Dame 29-16.
SBCC opened preseason camp on Monday. The 2014 football opener is Sept. 6 at home vs. San Bernardino Valley at 4 p.m.
