For the second game in a row, Malory Mitchell scored two goals as second-ranked Westmont posted a 2-0 women’s soccer win over the visiting Wildcats of Baker (Kan.).
In three games, the Warriors have outscored their opponents 10-1.
“Mal has had a couple of good games and I am proud of her as a senior captain,” said Westmont head coach Kristi Kiely. “On the second goal she got on the ball, beat a few players (on the dribble) and finished so nicely at the near post.”
Mitchell’s first goal came in the 16th minute after a shot on goal by sophomore Grace Lemley from the right side rebounded off Baker goalkeeper Rachel Theobald. Mitchell, playing on the left, collected the ball and delivered into the net from six yards out.
“It was nice to get the goal relatively early to settle in a little bit,” said Kiely. “We haven’t been starting games great, so that was nice to be able to do.
Mitchell’s second goal came in the 51st minute.
Offensively, the Warriors (3-0) outshot Baker 22-7. Ten of the Warriors shot were on goal while the Wildcats did not place a shot on frame.
“(Defender) Sophie Judd has been so solid this season and I am so proud of her as a senior captain to step up in that way,” said Kiely. “She and Sophie Fuller in the back are very hard to beat. Sophie was able to be physical with a very physical team in a very effective way.”
