Sophomore Saralisa Ortega fired a 5-over 77 on Saturday as SBCC teed off in the season-opening Desert Classic women’s golf tourney in Palm Springs. Nicole Reynolds added an 89 for the Vaqueros, who are in ninth place out of 11 schools.
College of the Desert leads after one round with an impressive 8-over 296. Sierra is in second at 314. Three Desert players shot 74 or better, led by medalist Brooke Raney who turned in a 1-under 71 at Indian Canyons Resort.
“We’re have a young team and we’re looking for improvement every round,” said coach Chuck Melendez. “Our goal right now is to play better tomorrow.”
The final round will be played on Sunday morning.
