Abel Gonzalez and the Bishop Diego football team opened its season with a bang.
Gonzalez, an All-CIF running back last season, rushed for 119 yards and two touchdowns, leading the Cardinals to a 56-0 rout at Oak Park on Friday night
The Cardinals roared out of the gate, scoring five touchdowns in the first quarter. Danny Molina started the onslaught with a 22-yard run on the second play from scrimmage. Less than two minutes later, AV Bennett took off on an 81-yard scoring run. Matt Shotwell scored on a 9-yard run and freshman John Harris followed with a 54-yard scamper.
Junior quarterback Spencer Stovesand made his first varsity start and connected with Molina for his first touchdown pass, a 22-yarder.
The Cardinals’ running attack racked up 347 of the team’s 358 total yards.
Defensively, Harris recovered a fumble and returned it 44 yards for a score.
Bishop led 42-0 at halftime.
The Cardinals play their home opener next Friday against San Diego Section power Santa Fe Christian.
