David John Hengsteler, a champion boxer and wrestler at UCSB in the 1940s and a member of the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame, passed away on July 23 in Oregon. He was 95.
Hengsteler was a collegiate heavyweight boxing champion in 1941 and collegiate heavyweight wrestling champion in 1942. He also played football for UCSB.
After graduating from UCSB, he started a teaching and coaching career at Inglewood High and was later hired at El Camino College in Torrance, where he coached for 25 years. His El Camino teams won five state wrestling titles.
Hengsteler is also in the El Camino College and National Wrestling Halls of Fame.
A memorial service is planned for the future.
