San Marcos freshman Sam Metzger finished in a tie for 36th place at the CIF Boys State Golf Championships at par-71 San Gabriel Country Club on Wednesday.
Metzger, who qualified as an individual, shot a 7-over par 78. His round included two birdies (on par-5 No. 13 and par-4 No. 15), five bogeys and two double bogeys.
“This is arguably one of the greatest freshman campaigns in school history,” said San Marcos coach Aaron Solis. “The entire school is proud of what Sam has accomplished.”
The individual champion was Justin Suh of San Jose Evergreen High. He shot a 4-under 67, edging out Jimmy Castles of San Jose Bellarmine Prep and Victor Ponte of Oxnard’s Rio Mesa by one stroke.
Westlake, with three players shooting 1-under 70, won the state team title with a score of 362. Rancho Bernardo and Dublin tied for second at 371.
