Dos Pueblos’ Stamatia Scarvelis, the defending State Champion in the shot put, earned the top seed at next week’s Southern Section D2 Championships with a throw of 49 feet and 10.5 inches.
By Scarvelis’ standards, it wasn’t a great distance as it was just the second time this year she’s been under 50 feet. But it served it purpose advancing the elite thrower to the divisional finals.
Scarvelis will also be the top seed in the discus. Like in the shot, Scarvelis was head and shoulders above the field yet was below her qualifying distance. Scarvelis threw 150′ 8″, over 16 feet farther than second-place Micaiah Lugo of Rio Mesa.
Several other Chargers advanced to next Saturday’s Southern Section Finals at Cerritos College.
Jon Dickinson and Joseph Ochoa both made it in the shot put. Ochoa threw 51′ 5″ and Dickinson 50′ 2″. Dickinson, who will be competing for UC Irvine next year, improved on his discus throw but finished in 13th place. The top nine in each event advance.
Addi Zerrenner battled Sarah Baxter in the 3200 and finished less than six seconds behind the running prodigy. Zerrenner bettered her time from last week’s league finals by nearly 40 seconds and crossed in 10:36.02. DP freshman Natalie McClure posted an 18th-place result in the same race.
Sydney Eilbacher will be competing in the pole vault and Niema Poindexter in the triple jump.
