Senior Joel Corona delivered the biggest hit of his high school career, giving Dos Pueblos a piece of the Channel League baseball title.
The Chargers beat Ventura 5-4 at Scott O’Leary Field to earn a share of their third straight league title. DP finished tied with Buena on top of the league standings at 9-3.
Corona hit a 3-0 pitch into left field and the ball was mishandled by the left fielder, allowing Luke Coffey to be waved home. The throw from the left fielder took the catcher up the line and there was a collision at the plate. The ball was knocked free and Coffey came in to score the winning run.
The Chargers battled back from a 4-1 deficit, scoring three in the sixth inning to tie the score.
“Offensively it seemed as though we were asleep for the first 5 innings,” DP coach Nick Katzenstein said. “We came out flat.
In the bottom of the sixth the Chargers scored three runs on singles by Daniel Buratto, Nick Noggle, a pinch-hit single by Gio Macias and a single by Quinn Peacock.
Darby Naughton pitched one-third of an inning to pick up the victory.
Michael Boelter started but left with two outs in the third with an aggravated arm. Joshua Tedeschi came in and pitched four shutout innings.
“It was a great win for the Chargers as we head into post-season play,” said Katzenstein.
