High School Runner of the Month: Tyler Bradford

Tyler Bradford’s high school running career has covered a lot of ground. The Dos Pueblos senior has competed in both cross country and track & field for four years.

“I like racing in track more than cross country, but I think I like cross country training more than I like track & field training because you’re more close-knit with people and it’s more free,” said Bradford, who will continue his running career in college at Westmont.

Bradford says he’s excited for taking that next step in competition and learning under the tutelage of Westmont head coach Russell Smelley.

For the Chargers’ track & field team this spring, Bradford is competing in the 800 meters and recently dipped under two minutes for the first time. He won the Santa Barbara County title in the 800 in April.

But when asked what he will remember most about his senior year, Bradford has cherished the time spent developing friendships with like-minded athletes.

“Just being in a car full of dudes who like to run. That was a lot of fun,” Bradford said, singling out training partners Lennie Nelson and Scott Beiza.

Tyler comes from a running family. His older brother, Evan,  just graduated from Westmont and will be competing in the NAIA Nationals for the third time this month.

“What makes Tyler a quality runner is his inner fire,” said Dos Pueblos head coach Chris Mollkoy. “He is competitive and pushes himself hard every day. Yet, he is humble and workmanlike in his approach. He is a quiet leader but is still encouraging and supportive to his teammates. “

Tyler, who is in the Leadership Program at Dos Pueblos, plans on studying English at Westmont, while possibly double-majoring in communications.
