After struggling in the first round on Monday, SBCC’s Blake McPherson and Felix Mory combined to shoot 2-under in the final 18 holes of the CCCAA State Men’s Golf Championships at the Victoria Club in Riverside.
McPherson, a sophomore captain, shot 79-70 for a 36-hole total of 5-over 149 on a warm (90 degrees) and windy day. His second-round score of 2-under 70 was second-best in the 43-man field and vaulted him into a tie for 16th overall.
Mory, a freshman from France, shot 79 and 72 for a 151 total that gave him a tie for 24th place. Mory tied for ninth in the second round with his even-par 72 on the 6,517-yard course.
Mory finished second in last week’s Southern Cal Regional while McPherson was third.
“It might have been nerves early and our guys may have tried to recover too quickly,” said coach Chuck Melendez. “They were more relaxed in the second round.
“It was a great season for us and these are great kids. Blake was our captain and showed great leadership. Felix is one of the best young guys I’ve ever had.”
Riverside City College claimed its first state title by winning a tiebreaker with defending state champion Canyons. Both teams posted 734 scores but Riverside won the sixth-man duel, 78-79. Chabot was third at 744 and San Jose took fourth at 750.
Sidney Wolf of Canyons was the state individual champ at 139 (71-68), beating Ventura’s Greg Robarge (71-70) by two shots.
