Cate’s boys volleyball team needed to erase deficits in each of the first two sets in order to get past Providence on Tuesday, as the Rams topped the Patriots 25-22, 26-24, 25-13 in a Condor League match.
The Patriots led for most of the first two sets but the dynamic serving of Morgan Pierce pushed Cate into the lead late in each set. Pierce served the Rams back to win game 2 after the Patriots led 23-18.
Pierce finished with six aces.
“Providence has really improved in just the short time since we played them last,” said Rams head coach Greg Novak, whose team is in second place in league with a record of 5-2.
Providence finishes its league season with a 4-4 record. The Patriots were led by Josh Dillon (5 kills, 4 blocks, 3 aces), Erik Sheets (11 kills, 1 block, 1 ace) and Kyle Beveridge (5 blocks).
“We have to learn to put games away,” said Patriots head coach Willy Rossow. “We had it and let the cat out of the bag.”
Cate was led by Spencer Whiteman nine kills and .389 hitting percentage. Oliver Welch hit .375 with seven kills.
Cate completes its league season on Wednesday against Besant Hill.
CIF brackets will be released on Friday.
