Cate’s Kevin Ha and Jason Xiao completed sweeps while only dropping five games in six sets, leading Cate to a 14-4 victory at Downey in a CIF Division 4 second-round match.
The Rams advance to the quarterfinals. Cate will host Garden Grove on Monday at 3 p.m.
Rams coach Bob Bonning said because of traffic, the team arrived five minutes before the scheduled match time. Court temperature was 100 degrees when play began at 3:20 p.m.
The Rams (15-5) didn’t seem bothered by the distractions as they established a 5-1 lead in the first round.
Johnowen Lowe gutted out an important first-round win, 6-4. The doubles teams also posted a 7-win afternoon. Michael Revord and Christian Herman posted a pair of 6-1 wins, and then Revord worked with Shuta Kobayashi to close out the afternoon with a 6-0 score.
Brendan Lokre and Jack Hoover overcame a slow start and earned a sweep on the day, including a 6-2 win over the Vikings No. 1 doubles team. At the No. 3 spot, Andrew Smith and Edward Cho lost two heartbreakers (4-6, 5-7), but picked up a 6-3 victory over the Vikings No. 1 team.
