Dos Pueblos extended its magical boys tennis season with a 15-3 win over Crescenta Valley in the first round of the CIF Division 1 playoffs on a hot Wednesday.
The Chargers improve to 17-3 and play fourth-seeded Corona del Mar in the second round on Friday.
In singles, Patrick Corpuz lost only three games in sweeping his three sets.
“He played efficiently, hardly sweated, and swept easily,” DP coach Liz Frech said. “Miles Baldwin felt a little under the weather when he began his matches, but he managed to take two sets before stepping out. In the second round, he fell behind but fought his way back, in spite of much coughing.”
Quinn Hensley rallied from a 1-4 deficit and took one set 7-5. The last and longest match of the day went to Mason Dochterman, who subbed in for Baldwin. He went the distance and won the set tiebreaker 7-2.
In doubles, DP took eight of nine sets. Mason Casady came in the second round as he was finishing up his IB test. Joshua Wang and Casady extended their record to 52-2. Alex Wang won two sets with Greg Steigerwald.
“I am proud of this dream team,” Frech said. “They had to deal with fatigue (IB and AP testing), illnesses, injuries, or the heaviness of the heat. Through it all, they persevered and stayed strong, positive, and focused.”
