The magical season for the Dos Pueblos tennis team came to an end on Friday against powerful Corona del Mar.
The Sea Kings swept in singles and knocked the Chargers out of the CIF Division 1 playoffs with a 13-5 decision in the second round.
“We knew going in that the Sea Kings were a top flight team, and we had nothing to lose,” DP coach Liz Frech said. “Corona del Mar is fully loaded in singles and doubles. Nonetheless, the Chargers gave everything they had in this last match, which was close to three hours.”
Patrick Corpuz lost two tight singles sets in the last two rounds.
In doubles- the first round went over an hour where Mason Casady/Joshua Wang and Alex Yang/Greg Steigerwald both came out on the short end of tiebreakers in the first round and lost 7-5.
Casady/Wang won their next two sets 6-1, 6-1 and finished the year with a 54-3 record.
Yang/Steigerwald won a tight second-round set. “At one point, Alex was on flat on the ground, counterpunching bullet balls and hit winners, said Frech.
Steigerwald suffered an injury in the set and did not play in the third round.
Miles Baldwin and Andrew Tufenkian endured a long second set and won 7-5. They won 6-2 in the third round.
DP enjoyed its best season in history. It shared the Channel League title with Santa Barbara, won the league doubbles title and posted its best record in Division 1 at 17-4.
“All in all, I have enjoyed this season immensely with this ‘dream’ team. We will be graduating seven incredible seniors,” said Frech.
