Teresa Downey, SBCC’s No. 1 singles player, won a close battle on Tuesday to complete her WSC women’s tennis campaign with a perfect record. Glendale (12-2, 8-2) beat Santa Barbara 8-1 to secure second place in conference.
Downey prevailed 6-4, 7-6 (5) in a tough battle with Viktoriya Shumakova to finish 8-0 in WSC dual matches. She’s 9-1 overall and has won her last nine in a row.
“It was breezy but overall a great day for tennis,” said coach Lance Kronberg. “They were just too strong for us and played very well on their home courts.”
The Vaqueros are 4-8 overall and took fourth in the WSC at 4-6.
Downey will be the No. 1 seed for the WSC Individual Tournament on Friday and Saturday at Ventura College.
