SBCC’s Teresa Downey posted a pair of upsets on Friday at Ventura College to move into the Final 8 in the State Women’s Tennis Championships at the Ojai.
The freshman left-hander from Grants Pass, Ore., is seeded 13th. She knocked off No. 4 Najah Simmons of Foothill 6-1, 6-3 and then beat No. 5 Mariel Bautista of Mt. San Antonio 6-2, 6-3 in the Round of 16.
Downey improved to 13-2 on the year.
“Teresa has shown the quality we have seen all season from her,” said coach Lance Kronberg.
Downey will battle No. 9 Sophia Najera of San Diego Mesa in the quarterfinals on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at the Ojai Athletic Club. Najera upset last year’s state runner-up and this year’s No. 1 seed Sarah Anderson of Fullerton 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (5).
The winner will play in the semifinals at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday.
