Santa Barbara High’s boys got double wins from three swimmers and beat San Marcos, 100-85, in a crosstown Channel League dual meet on Thursday.
The San Marcos girls remained undefeated with a 106-68 victory over the Dons. The Royals (8-0) got double wins from Olivia Smith and Dasha Depew. Smith won the 100 fly (1:00.50) and 200 IM (2:14.57), while Depew captured the 100 free (55.49) and 200 free (1:57.44).
Amanda Hayes won the 100 breast in 1:08.35, Madeline Kriz took the 100 back (1:04.95) and Riley Heiduk captured the 500 free (5:30.15). The 200 medley relay team of Graze Pizzinat, Smith, Hayes and Kriz won convincingly in 1:54.25.
“San Marcos swam great today,” Royals coach Chuckie Roth said. “Our coaching staff was very excited about the way we swam. Sophomore Hailey Gellert was moved up from JV to compete in the 200 IM and the 100 fly and she swam exceptional and proved to be a bright point in the meet.”
Roth also praised the swims of Brittany Prentice and Hailie Johnson.
For Santa Barbara Sierra McNeel-Moore captured the 50 free in 26.43 and Nina Enholm (185.15 points) won the diving competition. Jessica Gaffney (200 IM) and Anna Brummett (500 free) placed second and Kai McGeoy swam personal bests in the 200 (2:07.09) and 500 free (5:39.81)
Alex Roderick, Cuyler Gabriel and Ben Brewer paced the Santa Barbara boys to victory. Roderick won two close races, taking the 100 (1:51.84) and 200 freestyle (51.02) in less than a 10th of a second against George Kuesis of San Marcos.
Gabriel pull away from the field and won convincingly in the 100 fly (56.85) and 100 back (59.58).
Brewer edged out teammate John Salmon in the 200 IM (2:11.30) and dominated in the 500 free (5:05.73)
Santa Barbara coach Mark Walsh called Salman the swimmer of the meet for his breakthrough performances. He dropped seven seconds in the 200 IM to finish second by a tenth of a second and took third in the 500 free, missing second by a tenth of a second.
Spencer Kemp led a San Marcos sweep in the 100 breast with a time of 1:08.46. He also won the 50 free in 23.48. The Royals won the 200 medley relay in 1:48.20 with the team of Patrick Rowley, Kemp, Chuck Sweeney and Alex Zauner. Austin Howard won the diving with 202.38 points.
