PBB: Warriors fall behind early, lose to Santa Clara

Carpinteria fell behind 5-0 in the first inning and couldn’t recover, falling to Santa Clara 12-5 in a Frontier League baseball game on Wednesday.

Kevin Stein had a big day for the Warriors, hitting two two-run homers.

“It was quite a day for Kevin but within the frame of an important Frontier League loss,” Carpinteria coach Pat Cooney said. “While he deserves to enjoy his success, he would be first to tell you that he would rather contribute to a Warrior win.”

The Saints led 7-0 before the Warriors got on the board in the fourth. Javier Jasso singled and scored all the way from first on a single off the bat of Duncan Gordon. Stein followed with his first homer. Stein knocked in Gordon again with a homer in the sixth.

On the loss, Cooney said it was one of those days where the game plan didn’t work.

“The idea was to have our younger pitchers work through their challenges, knowing that the more experienced defense and offense is going to back them up,” he explained. “When the pitchers struggled and the defense struggled, the game got away from us. The bright spot was that our offense either maintained a good approach or improved.”

Carpinteria (8-8) and Santa Clara are both 3-2 in league.
