Santa Barbara High’s Gabe Grandcolas allowed only a seventh-inning hit and won a pitching duel with Ventura’s Troy Hawkins, 1-0, in a Channel League baseball game on Friday in Ventura.
“Gabe was in complete control of his fast ball and breaking pitches,” Santa Barbara pitching coach Mike Cooney said. “As a result, few balls were hit hard and only three made it to the outfield. It was his best effort of the season.”
Grandcolas (6-2) struck out six, didn’t walk a batter and allowed just one runner to reach third base.
The Dons scored the game’s only run in the fifth inning. Dalton Schroeder led off with a double, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Trevor Moropoulos and scored on a squeeze by Tim Stickles.
Santa Barbara (13-6, 5-3) managed only four hits off Hawkins (1-5). Ventura is 7-14 and 1-5 in Channel League.
