Carpinteria won its Frontier League baseball opener, 4-3, over Villanova on Wednesday.
Freshman right-hander Sal Delgado got the win on the mound and singled in Javier Jasso with two outs in the fourth inning for the eventual winning run. Delgado went 2-for-2 at the plate.
David Martinez pitched three scoreless innings of relief to pick up the save.
“One run games are the true test for a team,” Carpinteria coach Pat Cooney said. “Every pitch and every play matters. Players came up with timely hits and good plays in key spots. It’s just a single win but it was a big win for the group and a good way to start league play.”
The Warriors scored three runs in the second inning on RBI singles by Jonah Spach, Mo Sanchez, and Duncan Gordon.
Villanova (7-4, 0-3) tied the score in the top of the fourth. In the bottom of the fourth, Jasso ripped a one-out single, moved to second on a walk to Gordon and was driven by Delgado.
Gordon and Jasso each had two hits for the Warriors (6-5).
