Carlos Fairbanks and Joel Revo combined on a four-hitter, and Cate scratched out two runs to beat third-ranked Dunn, 2-1, in a Condor League battle of CIF Division 7 top-10 baseball teams on Wednesday.
“This was as good of a high school baseball game as you’re going to find,” Cate assistant coach Dave Soto said. “Both teams played exceptionally well and with great energy. I can’t say enough about the job that Carlos Fairbanks and Joel Revo did for us today. Carlos pitched like the ace he is and Joel came in and showed some serious gumption, coming in and slamming the door shut. This was a total team win; everyone contributed to this one and we are excited to get a win against such a great team.”
Fairbanks struck out seven, walked three, gave up two hits and a run. Revo, a freshman, also allowed two hits and pitched out of a jam in the seventh inning.
Soto praised the defense of Humza Khurshid, Dylan Ell, Chris Oh and Dean Smith.
The 8th-ranked Rams (8-4, 4-0) scored a run in the first inning off Dunn ace Shannon Carroll. Fairbanks singled with two outs and Zach Ell ripped a double to left to bring him home.
The only other Ram to get a hit in the game was Smith, but Cate cashed in on it. The sophomore led off the fifth inning with a single to center field, stole second base, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Revo and scored on squeeze bunt by Ben Swain.
