When Scott Johnston was named Laguna Blanca’s recipient of the Phil Womble Ethics in Sports Award, school athletic director Mike Biermann said he was the right person for the prestigious honor.
“When I was reading the description of the award, I was struck by where it says: ‘The recipients demonstrate the highest standards of ethics and sportsmanship,’” he said. “Not high standards, but the highest. That’s Scott. That’s how he lives his life. He doesn’t have to be reminded or told about it. He lives life with the highest standard of those two qualities.”
Johnston was presented the award at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table press luncheon.
Johnston plays volleyball and runs cross country for the Owls. His other activities include mock trial team and student ambassador. He’s been elected to the Global Leadership Conference, and he’s the Laguna Blanca Scholar-Athlete Award winner.
One of the stipulations of the Womble Award is that it’s given to a high school junior, so that person can set a good example for the younger athletes as a senior.
Johnston won’t have any trouble setting that high standard of ethics and sportsmanship, according to the AD.
“He will definitely fill Phil’s hope that the recipients of this award will be outstanding role models and leaders for their senior year,” said Biermann.
