Jill Fisher’s athletic career at San Marcos High School has been all about running. The senior sprinter is invaluable to the Royals this season in four events and has grown into being a team leader as a four-year varsity competitor.
Fisher picked up running as a high school freshman and fell in love with the sport.
“I guess it gives me a confidence that I didn’t have before,” said Fisher, who is looking at UC Irvine and UC San Diego for college.
Fisher is competing individually in the 100 and 200 meter sprints, and plays an important role on the 4×100 and 4×400 relay teams.
“I like the 100 better but I think my time is better in the 2 (hundred),” Fisher said.
San Marcos sprint coach Matt Crego, a Royals alumnus who competed at Azusa Pacific University, has been impressed by Fisher’s work ethic, especially in the offseason.
“(Her off-season training program) was awesome considering what type of student she is,” Crego explained. “I know she has a full load of classes and to be that dedicated, to want to train that hard, was really big.
“She was in the weight room every day, out here (on the track), and it’s really starting to pay off.”
Having started out as a freshman, Fisher has been able to grow into a leadership role this season. Fisher is on the 4×400 relay team that features three freshmen and one senior.
“I just feel like I have more experience and I like being able to teach the younger runners. What to do, how to train, how to stay in shape,” Fisher says.
“It’s been great for the (younger) girls because they see how dedicated she is,” said Royals head coach Marilyn Hantgin. “I think it gives them a great example of what it takes.”
Off the track, Fisher is a quality student who is involved with a number of extra-curriculars. Fisher is a part of the Writer’s Society and Speak Against Hate Club at San Marcos, and is also a member of the National Honors Society.
Fisher has set some personal goals for her senior track & field season.
“I really want to go sub-60 in the 400 somehow, and I want to get back down to my PR in the 100,” said Fisher.
