GLF: San Marcos’ depth is difference in win over DP

Grant Amerson fired a brilliant round of 65 for Dos Pueblos, but San Marcos had four players shoot in the 70s and pulled out a 381-389 golf win at Rancho San Marcos on Wednesday.

The win vaulted the Royals into sole possession of first place in the Channel League with a 5-1 record. Dos Pueblos is 4-2.

“This was a fantastic match,” San Marcos coach Aaron Solis said. “Grant’s 6-under-65 was simply amazing — only one bogey on the day. It’s not an official Channel League record (7 under 63) but this was at a much more difficult course and is one of the best rounds in Channel League history.”

A couple of freshmen led the way for San Marcos (12-3 overall). Sam Metzger shot a career-best 1-over 72 and Chad Visser fired his best score with a 73. Niels Andersen carded a 77 and Bennett Reichard finished with a 79.

“The depth we had today proved to be decisive,” Solis said. “Having a throw-out score of 80 is awesome.

“I’m very proud of each player grinding it out to shoot their best score possible. This was a true team effort to beat a great team.”

Michael Nam shot a 72 for Dos Pueblos.
