Sam Metzger of San Marcos shared medalist honors with Peter Griffith of Oaks Christian at 2-over 73, and the Royals scored a confidence-boosting win over the Lions, 395-402, in a non-league boys golf match at La Cumbre Country Club on Wednesday.
“Although Oaks Christian didn’t bring one of their best players, this was a great measuring stick win for us,” San Marcos coach Aaron Solis said. “It was great to see what kind of competition we are going to face in CIF, and they are one of the favorites, if not THE favorite, in our division.”
Bennett Reichard shot a 77 and Niels Anderson and Ethan Habecker each carded an 80 for San Marcos (7-1).
“The scores were a bit high for both teams,” Solis said. “The first 16 holes it was extremely windy and it even rained on us. The last two holes it was a beautiful spring day. But the course was in amazing shape, the wind just made it very difficult.”
Solis added: “Freshman Sam Metzger had a very solid round today, and I was proud of senior Ethan Habecker who had a tremendous back nine.”
