UC Santa Barbara will host the OGIO?UCSB Intercollegiate Golf Tournament at scenic Sandpiper Golf Course on the coast just north of Santa Barbara, on Monday and Tuesday, April 14-15, 2014. The tournament will be 54 holes, 36 on the first day, and 18 on day two.
The OGIO?Santa Barbara Intercollegiate Tournament was last played in 2012, also at Sandpiper. This will mark the third consecutive time that the tourney will have been played there. Previous tournaments were played at Rancho San Marcos, La Purisima Golf Course in Lompoc and the Alisal River Course in Solvang.
“Sandpiper is a beautiful and challenging course,” said UCSB head coach Steve Lass. “I also think it is good for the schools in the tournament to play a course that really reflects Santa Barbara and Sandpiper certainly does.”
In addition to UCSB, the tournament field will include Big West Conference rivals Cal State Northridge, Long Beach State, UC Irvine and UC Riverside. Sacramento State, Fresno State, Utah, Utah State and Air Force will round out the 10?team field. There will be several individuals competing as well.
The teams will play 36 holes on Monday, April 14 with an 8:15 a.m. shotgun start. The final 18 holes are on Tuesday, April 15 with tee times beginning at 7:30 a.m. on holes one and 10. Sandpiper is a 7,068?yard, par 72 course.
The 2012 OGIO-UCSB Invitational was won by Long Beach State, which defeated Saint Mary’s College by nine shots and UCSB by 22 shots. The individual medalist was Long Beach’s Xander Schauffele who shot an 8-under par 208. Past individual champions have included Craig Stadler (1973), Scott Simpson (1977) and Duffy Waldorf (1985).
