PHOENIX — Torin Shaikh picked up his seventh win of the season as Westmont Baseball posted a 4-2 win against Arizona Christian at Firestorm Field on Wednesday.
The Warriors improved to 31-14 overall and 18-13 in Golden State Athletic Conference play and stretched their winning streak to 10 in a row.
As a result of the win, Westmont has moved into a three-way tie for third place in the GSAC standings with Concordia (31-15) and Vanguard (27-17). Westmont is two games behind second-place The Master’s (35-13, 21-12). San Diego Christian (35-13, 22-9) sits atop the conference, four games ahead of the Warriors.
Shaikh allowed just one run on four hits in six innings of work. Sam Sheehan pitched one and two-third innings without allowing a run or a hit. He struck out four of the six batters he faced. Hunter Christenson earned the save by pitching the ninth inning and allowing just one run.
Two of the Warriors runs came in the top of the third inning. A lead-off walk to Fukushima and a single by Will Barring gave the Warriors men on first and second with no outs. A sacrifice bunt by Rudy Leon advanced both runners up one base before Steven Pollex walked to load the bases with Warriors. Joey Gonzalez drove in both runs with a single to center.
Westmont added two more runs in the top the seventh. With one away, Fukushima singled to center field and took second when Barring singled to right field. A Firestorm error allowed Fukushima to score and Barring to reach third base. Leon then hit a fly ball to center field that permitted Barring to tag up and score.
