Everyone on the San Marcos boys volleyball team got to play a part in Roger Kuntz’s 300th career victory as a volleyball coach Tuesday night at the Thunderhut.

Kuntz used his starters only in the second set and the support players played the rest of the way in a 25-17, 25-7, 25-15 sweep over Buena.

Back-up setter Greg Kronen handed out 28 assists in two sets. The attack was led by senior Emerson Pizzinat with six kills and four blocks. Connor Everman had seven kills and Ben Hauschild added seven kills.

The 300 wins cover Kuntz’s 16-year volleyball coaching career. He’s been at San Marcos for the last eight years. Before that he coached eight years at Middle Park High in Colorado.

“You either have to have a lot of talent or be pretty dog-gone old, one of the other,” he cracked about reaching the milestone.

The fans were ready for the big moment. As the Royals got closer to their 25th point in the third set, the crowd held up cards with the number 300 on them.

Kuntz was presented a photo of the team celebrating the title at last month’s Dos Pueblos Invitational.

Kuntz’s Royals are 19-1 overall, 4-1 in Channel League and ranked No. 1 in CIF Division 2.

Asked what the milestone means to him, Kuntz replied, “It means that I’ve really loved my job for a long, long time and I’ve been fortunate to be very successful, and that doesn’t come around every day.”
