In a battle of CIF No. 1-ranked teams, San Marcos swept South Pasadena, 25-21, 25-22, 25-23, in a non-league boys volleyball match on the road Monday night.
The Royals are top-ranked in Division 2 while South Pasadena is the No. 1 team in Division 3.
“It was good to get on the road and play a strong team after a one week layoff,” said San Marcos coach Roger Kuntz.
The Royals (25-3) worked on their middle attack. Cole Wenal had three kills and three blocks and Jack Castanha collected three kills. Outside hitter Nick Rockwell also added three kills.
San Marcos’ “Thunder and Lightning” tandem of Shane Hauschild and Baker Johnson led the way with 16 and 9 kills, respectively. Setter Christian Widmer handed out 34 assists.
Kuntz said the layoff affected some parts of the Royals’ game
“Our serve receive was not as clean as we have been during the season,” he said. “However, we generated good offense and served very tough.”
