Dos Pueblos worked on its middle attack on the first day of the King of Cali Tournament at Bellarmine Prep in San Jose, and the Chargers came away with a pair of victories.
They defeated Wilcox (25-15, 25-13) and Los Gatos (25-21, 25-18).
“Our ball control was really on tonight, which yielded very few passing errors and the ability to get middles Elliot Brainerd, Kurt Randmaa and Eli Shulman involved,” DP coach Ehren Hug said. “The middles have been working their tails off in practice in the pursuit of that perfect block and it’s really starting to show because our block is getting cleaner and cleaner.”
Brainerd had 3 kills on 5 attempts, Randmaa recorded 4 kills on 7 attempts and Shulman added two kills on 4 attempts. Eli Wopat played a solid match with 7 kills on 11 attempts with 1 error and two blocks.
Hug said Mark Raphael set a well balanced match and spread the ball around nicely.
The Chargers and Los Gatos battled back and forth before DP pull away. Randmaa had a good match with 6 kills on 9 attempts, and Matt Sessler put away 10 kills on the outside. Nate Holmes added eight kills.
Hug praised the serving of Niko Plesons. “He was on fire from the service line all night,” said the coach.
The Chargers play Saratoga and Thousand Oaks today.
